Didi Chuxing (“DiDi”) is a Chinese private company and is the world’s leading mobile transportation platform. The company offers a full range of app-based transportation services for 550 million users across Asia, Latin America and Australia, including taxi, bus, car hiring, bike sharing and food delivery. The company was founded in 2012 by an Alibaba employee and soon became the largest taxi order application.
The company’s rise was overshadowed in 2018, when several news was published about a passenger using the carpooling service who was killed by her driver and another was raped and killed. Following these incidents, DiDi suspended its carpooling services. In the same year, the company launched the “Red Flag Steering Wheel” programme where members of the Chinese Communist Party would be visible as drivers. The company also pledged to hire 1,000 members of the Communist Party.
In Europe and implicitly in Romania, DiDi entered an investment partnership with Taxify (former Bolt) from Estonia in 2017.
